Under the Wings of Columbia

A flag for the people of Columbia, South Carolina

Since 1912, Columbia has had a city flag, but very few people flew it. In 2020, a new flag was adopted.

The flag instills a sense of pride and spirit that reflects vibrancy and creativity of the people of the City of Columbia.

Make the flag your own.

The design of the flag is open and available for use, no matter the purpose.

The Flag Design Process

Through an extensive public process, the Columbia Design League and One Columbia for Arts and Culture worked with the City of Columbia to arrive at a flag that no longer represented just the government of the City of Columbia, but rather its people.

“…in this town we should find refuge under the wings of Columbia”

— John Lewis Gervais, upon the founding of Columbia, SC

City Flag Design

Inspired by the work of Ted Kaye in his guide Good Flag, Bad Flag and the TedTalk by Roman Mars, many cities are realizing that they can improve their own flag designs or even adopt a flag for the very first time. Track the progress across the country with the Portland Flag Association.
